1 Corinthians 1:11-31 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
11 My brothers, some from Chloe's household1 have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul";2 another, "I follow Apollos";3 another, "I follow Cephasa ";4 still another, "I follow Christ." 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized intob the name of Paul?5 14 I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus6 and Gaius,7 15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household8 of Stephanas;9 beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize,10 but to preach the gospel--not with words of human wisdom,11 lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ the Wisdom and Power of God

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness12 to those who are perishing,13 but to us who are being saved14 it is the power of God.15 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."c16 20 Where is the wise man?17 Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age?18 Has not God made foolish19 the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world20 through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save21 those who believe.22 22 Jews demand miraculous signs23 and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified:24 a stumbling block25 to Jews and foolishness26 to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called,27 both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God28 and the wisdom of God.29 25 For the foolishness30 of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness31 of God is stronger than man's strength. 26 Brothers, think of what you were when you were called.32 Not many of you were wise33 by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose34 the foolish35 things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not36--to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him.37 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus,38 who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness,39 holiness40 and redemption.41 31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."d42
