who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge1 of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit,2 for obedience3 to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood:4 Grace and peace be yours in abundance.5
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!6 In his great mercy7 he has given us new birth8 into a living hope9 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,104
and into an inheritance11 that can never perish, spoil or fade12--kept in heaven for you,135
who through faith are shielded by God's power14 until the coming of the salvation15 that is ready to be revealed16 in the last time.
In this you greatly rejoice,17 though now for a little while18 you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.197
These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire20--may be proved genuine21 and may result in praise, glory and honor22 when Jesus Christ is revealed.238
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him24 and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.2510
Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke26 of the grace that was to come to you,27 searched intently and with the greatest care,2811
trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ29 in them was pointing when he predicted30 the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,31 when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you32 by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.33 Even angels long to look into these things.
