In this you greatly rejoice,1 though now for a little while2 you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.37
These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire4--may be proved genuine5 and may result in praise, glory and honor6 when Jesus Christ is revealed.78
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him8 and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.910
Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke10 of the grace that was to come to you,11 searched intently and with the greatest care,1211
trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ13 in them was pointing when he predicted14 the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,15 when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you16 by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.17 Even angels long to look into these things.
Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled;18 set your hope19 fully on the grace to be given you20 when Jesus Christ is revealed.2114
As obedient22 children, do not conform23 to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.2415
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;2516
for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."a26
