1 Samuel 2:3-13 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
3 "Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance,1 for the LORD is a God who knows,2 and by him deeds3 are weighed.4 4 "The bows of the warriors are broken,5 but those who stumbled are armed with strength.6 5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food, but those who were hungry7 hunger no more. She who was barren8 has borne seven children, but she who has had many sons pines away. 6 "The LORD brings death and makes alive;9 he brings down to the gravea and raises up.10 7 The LORD sends poverty and wealth;11 he humbles and he exalts.12 8 He raises13 the poor14 from the dust15 and lifts the needy16 from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor.17 "For the foundations18 of the earth are the LORD's; upon them he has set the world. 9 He will guard the feet19 of his saints,20 but the wicked will be silenced in darkness.21 "It is not by strength22 that one prevails; 10 those who oppose the LORD will be shattered.23 He will thunder24 against them from heaven; the LORD will judge25 the ends of the earth. "He will give strength26 to his king and exalt the horn27 of his anointed." 11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah,28 but the boy ministered29 before the LORD under Eli the priest.

Eli's Wicked Sons

12 Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard30 for the LORD. 13 Now it was the practice31 of the priests with the people that whenever anyone offered a sacrifice and while the meat32 was being boiled, the servant of the priest would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand.
