When Samuel grew old, he appointed1 his sons as judges for Israel.
The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah,2 and they served at Beersheba.33
But his sons4 did not walk in his ways. They turned aside5 after dishonest gain and accepted bribes6 and perverted7 justice.
So all the elders8 of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.95
They said to him, "You are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint a king10 to leada11 us, such as all the other nations12 have."
But when they said, "Give us a king13 to lead us," this displeased14 Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.
