But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.19
People who want to get rich2 fall into temptation and a trap3 and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.
For the love of money4 is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith5 and pierced themselves with many griefs.6
But you, man of God,7 flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,8 faith, love,9 endurance and gentleness.
Fight the good fight10 of the faith. Take hold of11 the eternal life12 to which you were called when you made your good confession13 in the presence of many witnesses.
In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate14 made the good confession,15 I charge you1614
to keep this command without spot or blame17 until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,1815
which God will bring about in his own time19--God, the blessed20 and only Ruler,21 the King of kings and Lord of lords,2216
who alone is immortal23 and who lives in unapproachable light,24 whom no one has seen or can see.25 To him be honor and might forever. Amen.2617
Command those who are rich27 in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,28 which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God,29 who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.3018
Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds,31 and to be generous and willing to share.32
