Endure hardship with us1 like a good soldier2 of Christ Jesus.

No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs--he wants to please his commanding officer.

Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown3 unless he competes according to the rules.

The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.4

Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.

Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead,5 descended from David.6 This is my gospel,7

for which I am suffering8 even to the point of being chained9 like a criminal. But God's word10 is not chained.

Therefore I endure everything11 for the sake of the elect,12 that they too may obtain the salvation13 that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.14

Here is a trustworthy saying:15 If we died with him, we will also live with him;16

if we endure, we will also reign with him.17 If we disown him, he will also disown us;18

if we are faithless, he will remain faithful,19 for he cannot disown himself.
