5 Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown1 unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.2 7 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. 8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead,3 descended from David.4 This is my gospel,5 9 for which I am suffering6 even to the point of being chained7 like a criminal. But God's word8 is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything9 for the sake of the elect,10 that they too may obtain the salvation11 that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.12 11 Here is a trustworthy saying:13 If we died with him, we will also live with him;14 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him.15 If we disown him, he will also disown us;16 13 if we are faithless, he will remain faithful,17 for he cannot disown himself.

A Workman Approved by God

14 Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words;18 it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.19
