17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt, with mighty power he led them out of that country,1 18 he endured their conducta2 for about forty years in the desert,3 19 he overthrew seven nations in Canaan4 and gave their land to his people5 as their inheritance.6 20 All this took about 450 years. "After this, God gave them judges7 until the time of Samuel the prophet.8 21 Then the people asked for a king,9 and he gave them Saul10 son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin,11 who ruled forty years. 22 After removing Saul,12 he made David their king.13 He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart;14 he will do everything I want him to do.'15 23 "From this man's descendants16 God has brought to Israel the Savior17 Jesus,18 as he promised.19 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.20 25 As John was completing his work,21 he said: 'Who do you think I am? I am not that one.22 No, but he is coming after me, whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.'23 26 "Brothers,24 children of Abraham,25 and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation26 has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus,27 yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets28 that are read every Sabbath.
