Samuel Davies (1723-1761) was a leading preacher and activist during the Revolutionary War. He was born in Delaware, served in Virginia, and is famed for influencing Patrick Henry with his oratory. He is credited with being the first American-born hymn writer, strongly encouraged literacy among the slaves of the colonies, and pushed for protection of religious freedom in America. He became the president of Princeton University in 1759.
