Mother’s Day
May 14
Hearts with no walls
When God needed to impress on Adam and Eve how their sinful rebellion was going to hurt their lives, he had a different message for each. To Adam (and all men) God described how work itself would become frustrating and difficult. To Eve (and all wives and mothers) God announced that their children would cause them pain.
The “Song of Simeon” has become a powerful hymn in the Christian liturgy, and its text has furnished comfort to thousands of Christian funeral mourners. But Simeon also had something somber to say to mother Mary: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too” (Luke 2:34,35). Through his prophetic foresight Simeon predicted Mary’s anguish of spirit at having to witness her Son’s crucifixion.
A dear friend of mine, also named Mary, told me once, “Women’s hearts have no walls.” That is, they are open and vulnerable to the people they love, especially their children.
This Mother’s Day, think of all the things for which you are grateful for your mom. Don’t forget to pause and appreciate the fact that she loves you in spite of all the pain you have caused her.
