Then the LORDraised up an adversary to Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he was of the aroyalline in Edom.
For it came about, 1when David was in Edom, and Joab the commander of the army had gone up to bury the slain, and had 2struckdowneverymale in Edom16
(for Joab and allIsraelstayedtheresixmonths, until he had cutoffeverymale in Edom ),
that Hadadfledbto Egypt, he and certainEdomites of his father'sservants with him, while Hadad was a youngboy.
They arose from Midian and came to 3Paran; and they tookmen with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaohking of Egypt, who gave him a house and assigned him food and gave him land.
Now HadadfoundgreatfavorcbeforePharaoh, so that he gave him in marriage the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.
The sister of Tahpenesbore his sonGenubath, whom Tahpenesweaned in Pharaoh'shouse; and Genubath was in Pharaoh'shouseamong the sons of Pharaoh.
But 4when Hadadheard in Egypt that Davidslept with his fathers and that Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadadsaid to Pharaoh, "Send me away, that I may go to my own country."
Then Pharaohsaid to him, "But what have you lacked with me, that behold, you are seeking to go to your own country?" And he answered, "Nothing; nevertheless you must surelydlet me go."
235God also raised up another adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his lord6Hadadezerking of Zobah.
He gatheredmen to himself and becameleader of a maraudingband, 7after Davidslew them of Zobah; and they went to Damascus and stayedethere, and reigned in Damascus.
So he was an adversary to Israelall the days of Solomon, along with the evil that Hadad did; and he abhorredIsrael and reignedoverAram.
Then 8Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, Solomon'sservant, whose mother'sname was Zeruah, a widow, 9also frebelled against the king.
Now this was the reasonwhy he grebelled against the king: 10Solomonbuilt the hMillo, and closed up the breach of the city of his fatherDavid.
Now the manJeroboam was a valiantwarrior, and when 11Solomonsaw that the youngman was iindustrious, he appointed him over all the jforcedlabor of the house of Joseph.
It came about at that time, when Jeroboamwent out of Jerusalem, that 12the prophetAhijah the Shilonitefound him on the road. Now kAhijah had clothed himself with a newcloak; and both of them were alone in the field.
Then 13Ahijahtookhold of the newcloakwhich was on him and tore it into twelvepieces.
He said to Jeroboam, "Take for yourself tenpieces; for thussays the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Behold, 14I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and give you tentribes32
(15but he will haveonetribe, for the sake of My servantDavid and for the sake of Jerusalem, 16the citywhich I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel ),
33because they have forsaken Me, and 17have worshipedAshtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, 18Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the sons of Ammon; and they have not walked in My ways, doingwhat is right in My sight and observing My statutes and My ordinances, as his fatherDavid did.
'Nevertheless I will not take the wholekingdom out of his hand, but I will make him lrulerall the days of his life, for the sake of My servantDavidwhom I chose, whoobserved My commandments and My statutes;
but 19I will take the kingdom from his son'shand and give it to you, even tentribes.
'But 20to his son I will giveonetribe, 21that My servantDavid may have a lampalwaysbefore Me in Jerusalem, 22the citywhere I have chosen for Myself to put My name.
'I will take you, and you shall reign over whatevermyou desire, and you shall be kingoverIsrael.
'Then it will be, that if you listen to all that I command you and walk in My ways, and dowhat is right in My sight by observing My statutes and My commandments, as My servantDaviddid, then 23I will be with you and 24build you an enduringhouse as I built for David, and I will giveIsrael to you.
'Thus I will afflict the ndescendants of David for this, but not always .' "
40Solomonsought therefore to putJeroboam to death; but Jeroboamarose and fled to Egypt to 25Shishakking of Egypt, and he was in Egyptuntil the death of Solomon.
4126Now the rest of the acts of Solomon and whatever he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?
Thus 27the time that Solomonreigned in JerusalemoverallIsrael was fortyyears.
And Solomon28slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of his fatherDavid, and his son29Rehoboamreigned in his place.
