Now it came about afterthesethings that Naboth the Jezreelitehad a vineyardwhich was in 1Jezreelbeside the palace of Ahabking of Samaria.
2Ahabspoke to Naboth, saying, "2Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetablegardenbecause it is closebeside my house, and I will give you a bettervineyardthan it in its place ; ifayou like , I will give you the price of bit in money."
But Nabothsaid to Ahab, "The LORDforbid me 3that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers."
44So Ahabcame into his housesullen and vexedbecause of the wordwhichNaboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." And he laydown on his bed and turnedaway his face and atenocfood.
But Jezebel his wifecame to him and said to him, "How is it that your spirit is so sullen that you are not eatingdfood ?"
So he said to her, "Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, 'Give me your vineyard for money ; or else, if it pleases you, I will give you a vineyard in its place.' But he said, 'I will not give you my vineyard.' "
7Jezebel his wifesaid to him, "5Do you nowereignoverIsrael ? Arise, eatbread, and let your heart be joyful ; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite."
86So she wroteletters in Ahab'sname and sealed them with his seal, and sentletters to 7the elders and to the nobleswho were living with Naboth in his city.
Now she wrote in the letters, saying, "Proclaim a fast and seatNaboth at the head of the people ;
and seattwo8worthlessmenbefore him, and let them testify against him, saying, '9You cursedGod and the king.' Then take him out and 10stone him fto death."
So the men of his city, the elders and the nobleswholived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them, just as it was written in the letterswhich she had sent them.
They 11proclaimed a fast and seatedNaboth at the head of the people.
Then the twoworthlessmencame in and satbefore him; and the worthlessmentestified against him, even against Naboth, before the people, saying, "NabothcursedGod and the king." 12So they took him outside the city and stoned him gto death with stones.
Then they sent word to Jezebel, saying, "Naboth has been stoned and is dead."
When Jezebelheard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebelsaid to Ahab, "Arise, takepossession of the vineyard of Naboth, the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money ; for Naboth is not alive, but dead."
When Ahabheard that Naboth was dead, Ahabarose to godown to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to takepossession of it.
Then the word of the LORDcame to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
18"Arise, godown to meetAhabking of Israel, 13who is in Samaria ; behold, he is in the vineyard of Nabothwhere he has gonedown to takepossession of it.
