Then Saulheard that David and the menwho were with him had been discovered. Now 1Saul was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisktree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standingaround him.
7Saulsaid to his servants who stoodaround him, "Hearnow, O Benjamites! Will the son of Jessealsogive to all of you fields and vineyards? 2Will he make you allcommanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?
"For all of you have conspiredagainst me so that there is noone who adiscloses to me 3when my sonmakes a covenant with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you 4who is sorry for me or bdiscloses to me that my son has stirred up my servantagainst me to lie in ambush, as it is thisday."
Then 5Doeg the Edomite, who was cstanding by the servants of Saul, said, "6I saw the son of Jessecoming to Nob, to 7Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.
"8He inquired of the LORD for him, 9gave him provisions, and 10gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine."
Then the kingsent someone to summonAhimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father'shousehold, the priestswho were in Nob; and all of them came to the king.
12Saulsaid, "Listennow, son of Ahitub." And he danswered, "Here I am, my lord."
13Saul then said to him, "Why have you and the son of Jesseconspiredagainst me, in that you have given him bread and a sword and have inquired of God for him, so that he would rise up against me 11by lying in ambush as it is thisday?"
1412Then Ahimelechanswered the king and said, "And who among all your servants is as faithful as David, even the king'sson-in-law, who eis captain over your guard, and is honored in your house?
"Did I just begin13to inquire of God for him today? Far be it from me! 14Do not let the kingimputeanything to his servant or to any of the household of my father, for your servantknowsnothingfat all of thiswholeaffair."
But the kingsaid, "You shall surelydie, Ahimelech, you and all your father'shousehold!"
And 15the kingsaid to the gguards who were attending him, "Turnaround and put the priests of the LORD to death, because their handalso is with David and because they knew that he was fleeing and did not hreveal it to me." But the 16servants of the king were not willing to putforth their hands to iattack the priests of the LORD.
Then the kingsaid to Doeg, "You turnaround and jattack the priests." And Doeg the Edomiteturnedaround and kattacked the priests, and 17he killed that dayeighty-fivemen18who wore the linenephod.
And 19he struckNob the city of the priests with the edge of the sword, bothmen and women, children and infants; also oxen, donkeys, and sheep he struck with the edge of the sword.
But 20oneson of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, namedAbiathar, 21escaped and fledafterDavid.
21AbiathartoldDavid that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD.
Then Davidsaid to Abiathar, "I knew on that day, when22Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surelytellSaul. I have broughtabout the death of everyperson in your father'shousehold.
23"Stay with me; do not be afraid, for 23he whoseeks my lifeseeks your life, for you are lsafe with me."
