When it was toldSaul that David had come to Keilah, Saulsaid, "God has adelivered him into my hand, for he shut himself in by entering a city with double gates and bars."
So Saulsummonedall the people for war, to godown to Keilah to besiegeDavid and his men.
Now Davidknew that Saul was plottingevilagainst him; so he said to 1Abiathar the priest, "2Bring the ephodhere."
Then Davidsaid, "O LORDGod of Israel, Your servant has heard for certain that Saul is seeking to come to Keilah to destroy the city on my account.
"Will the men of Keilahsurrender me into his hand? Will Saulcomedownjust as Your servant has heard? O LORDGod of Israel, I pray, tell Your servant." And the LORDsaid, "He will comedown."
Then Davidsaid, "Will the men of Keilahsurrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?" And the LORDsaid, "3They will surrender you."
Then David and his men, 4about sixhundred, arose and departed from Keilah, and they went5wherever they could go. When it was toldSaul that David had escaped from Keilah, he bgave up the pursuit.
14Davidstayed in the wilderness in the strongholds, and remained in the hillcountry in the wilderness of 6Ziph. And Saulsought him everyday, but 7God did not deliver him into his hand
Now Davidcbecameaware that Saul had come out to seek his life while David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh.
And Jonathan, Saul'sson, arose and went to David at Horesh, and d8encouraged him in God.
Thus he said to him, "9Do not be afraid, because the hand of Saul my father will not find you, and you will be kingoverIsrael and I will be next to you; and 10Saul my fatherknows that also."
So 11the two of them made a covenantbefore the LORD; and Davidstayed at Horesh while Jonathanwent to his house.
Then 12Ziphitescame up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Is David not hiding with us in the strongholds at Horesh, on 13the hill of Hachilah, which is on the esouth of fJeshimon20"Now then, O king, comedown according to all the desire of your soul to gdoso; and 14our part shall be to surrender him into the king'shand."
21Saulsaid, "May you be blessed of the LORD, 15for you have hadcompassion on me
22"Gonow, makemoresure, and investigate and see his placewhere his hhaunt is, and who has seen him there; for I am told that he is verycunning.
"So look, and learnaboutall the hidingplaceswhere he hides himself and return to me with certainty, and I will go with you; and if he is in the land, I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah."
Then they arose and went to ZiphbeforeSaul. Now David and his men were in the wilderness of 16Maon, in the Arabah to the isouth of jJeshimon.
When Saul and his menwent to seek him, they toldDavid, and he camedown to the rock and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saulheard it, he pursuedDavid in the wilderness of Maon.
26Saulwent on oneside of the mountain, and David and his men on the otherside of the mountain; and David was hurrying to getaway from Saul, for Saul and his men17were surroundingDavid and his men to seize them.
But a messengercame to Saul, saying, "Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid on the land."
So Saulreturned from pursuingDavid and went to meet the Philistines; therefore they called that placekthe Rock of Escape.
29lDavidwent up from there and stayed in the strongholds of 18Engedi.
