I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day.1 I have been moving from place to place with a tent2 as my dwelling.37
Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites,4 did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd5 my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house6 of cedar?7" '
"Now then, tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock8 to be ruler9 over my people Israel.109
I have been with you wherever you have gone,11 and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.12 Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men of the earth.1310
And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant14 them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.15 Wicked16 people will not oppress them anymore,17 as they did at the beginning
and have done ever since the time I appointed leadersa18 over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.19 " 'The LORD declares20 to you that the LORD himself will establish21 a house22 for you:
When your days are over and you rest23 with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body,24 and I will establish his kingdom.2513
He is the one who will build a house26 for my Name,27 and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.2814
I will be his father, and he will be my son.29 When he does wrong, I will punish him30 with the rod31 of men, with floggings inflicted by men.
But my love will never be taken away from him,32 as I took it away from Saul,33 whom I removed from before you.
Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before meb; your throne34 will be established35 forever.36' "
