Then Elishacame to 1Damascus. Now 2Ben-hadadking of Aram was sick, and it was told him, saying, "3The man of God has comehere ."

The kingsaid to 4Hazael, "5Take a gift in your hand and go to meet the man of God, and 6inquire of the LORD by him, saying, 'Will I recover from thissickness ?' "

So Hazaelwent to meet him and took a gift in his hand, even every kind of goodthing of Damascus, fortycamels'loads ; and he came and stoodbefore him and said, "7Your sonBen-hadadking of Aram has sent me to you, saying, 'Will I recover from thissickness ?' "

Then Elishasaid to him, "8Go, say to him, 'You will surelyrecover,' but the 9LORD has shown me that he will certainlydie."

He afixed his gazesteadily on him 10until he was ashamed, and 11the man of Godwept.
12Hazaelsaid, "Why does my lordweep ?" Then he banswered, "Because12I know the evil that you will do to the sons of Israel : their strongholds you will set on fire, and their youngmen you will kill with the sword, and their littleones you 13will dash in pieces, and their women with child you will rip up."

Then Hazaelsaid, "But what is your servant, 14who is but a dog, that he should dothisgreatthing ?" And Elishacanswered, "15The LORD has shown me that you will be kingoverAram."

So he departed from Elisha and returned to his master, who said to him, "What did Elishasay to you?" And he danswered, "He told me that 16you would surelyrecover."

On the followingday, he took the cover and dipped it in water and spread it on his face, 17so that he died. And Hazaelbecameking in his place.
