A Lament and Call to Repentance

1 Hear this word, O house of Israel, this lament¹ I take up concerning you: 2 "Fallen is Virgin² Israel, never to rise again, deserted in her own land, with no one to lift her up.³" 3 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "The city that marches out a thousand strong for Israel will have only a hundred left; the town that marches out a hundred strong will have only ten left.⁴" 4 This is what the LORD says to the house of Israel: "Seek⁵ me and live;⁶ 5 do not seek Bethel, do not go to Gilgal,⁷ do not journey to Beersheba.⁸ For Gilgal will surely go into exile, and Bethel will be reduced to nothing.^a⁹" 6 Seek¹⁰ the LORD and live,¹¹ or he will sweep through the house of Joseph like a fire;¹² it will devour, and Bethel¹³ will have no one to quench it.¹⁴
