Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, 1his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal familya and of 2the nobility,
youths without 3blemish, of good appearance and 4skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king's palace, and to 5teach them the literature and language of the 6Chaldeans.
The king assigned them a daily portion of 7the food that the king ate, and of 8the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for 9three years, and at the end of that time they were to 10stand before the king.
Among these were 11Daniel, 12Hananiah, 13Mishael, and 14Azariah of the tribe of Judah.
And 15the chief of the eunuchs 16gave them names: 17Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.
