Listen,1 O heavens,2 and I will speak; hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.32
Let my teaching fall like rain4 and my words descend like dew,56 like showers7 on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.
I will proclaim8 the name of the LORD.9 Oh, praise the greatness10 of our God!
He is the Rock,11 his works are perfect,12 and all his ways are just. A faithful God13 who does no wrong, upright14 and just is he.155
They have acted corruptly toward him; to their shame they are no longer his children, but a warped and crooked generation.a166
Is this the way you repay17 the LORD, O foolish18 and unwise people?19 Is he not your Father,20 your Creator,b who made you and formed you?217
Remember the days of old;22 consider the generations long past.23 Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you.248
When the Most High25 gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind,26 he set up boundaries27 for the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.c289
For the LORD's portion29 is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance.3010
In a desert31 land he found him, in a barren and howling waste.32 He shielded33 him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye,3411
like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young,35 that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions.3612
The LORD alone led37 him;38 no foreign god was with him.3913
He made him ride on the heights40 of the land and fed him with the fruit of the fields. He nourished him with honey from the rock,41 and with oil42 from the flinty crag,
with curds and milk from herd and flock and with fattened lambs and goats, with choice rams of Bashan43 and the finest kernels of wheat.44 You drank the foaming blood of the grape.4515
Jeshurund46 grew fat47 and kicked; filled with food, he became heavy and sleek. He abandoned48 the God who made him and rejected the Rock49 his Savior.
They made him jealous50 with their foreign gods and angered51 him with their detestable idols.
They sacrificed52 to demons,53 which are not God-- gods they had not known,54 gods that recently appeared,55 gods your fathers did not fear.
You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot56 the God who gave you birth.
The LORD saw this and rejected them57 because he was angered by his sons and daughters.5820
"I will hide my face59 from them," he said, "and see what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation,60 children who are unfaithful.6121
They made me jealous62 by what is no god and angered me with their worthless idols.63 I will make them envious by those who are not a people; I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.6422
For a fire has been kindled by my wrath,65 one that burns to the realm of deathe below.66 It will devour67 the earth and its harvests68 and set afire the foundations of the mountains.6923
"I will heap calamities70 upon them and spend my arrows71 against them.
I will send wasting famine72 against them, consuming pestilence73 and deadly plague;74 I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts,75 the venom of vipers76 that glide in the dust.7725
In the street the sword will make them childless; in their homes terror78 will reign.79 Young men and young women will perish, infants and gray-haired men.8026
I said I would scatter81 them and blot out their memory from mankind,8227
but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy, lest the adversary misunderstand83 and say, 'Our hand has triumphed; the LORD has not done all this.' "8428
They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment85 in them.
If only they were wise and would understand this86 and discern what their end will be!8730
How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight,88 unless their Rock had sold them,89 unless the LORD had given them up?9031
For their rock is not like our Rock,91 as even our enemies concede.9232
Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom93 and from the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are filled with poison,94 and their clusters with bitterness.9533
Their wine is the venom of serpents, the deadly poison of cobras.9634
"Have I not kept this in reserve and sealed it in my vaults?9735
It is mine to avenge;98 I will repay.99 In due time their foot will slip;100 their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.101"
The LORD will judge his people102 and have compassion103 on his servants104 when he sees their strength is gone and no one is left, slave105 or free.
He will say: "Now where are their gods, the rock they took refuge in,10638
the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offerings?107 Let them rise up to help you! Let them give you shelter!
"See now that I myself am He!108 There is no god besides me.109 I put to death110 and I bring to life,111 I have wounded and I will heal,112 and no one can deliver out of my hand.11340
I lift my hand114 to heaven and declare: As surely as I live forever,11541
when I sharpen my flashing sword116 and my hand grasps it in judgment, I will take vengeance117 on my adversaries and repay those who hate me.11842
I will make my arrows drunk with blood,119 while my sword devours flesh:120 the blood of the slain and the captives, the heads of the enemy leaders."
Rejoice,121 O nations, with his people,fg for he will avenge the blood of his servants;122 he will take vengeance on his enemies123 and make atonement for his land and people.12444
Moses came with Joshuah125 son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people.
