Then they gavemoney to the masons and carpenters, and 1food, drink and oil to the Sidonians and to the Tyrians, 2to bringcedarwood from Lebanon to the sea at 3Joppa, according to the permission they had afrom 4Cyrusking of Persia.
Now in the secondyear of their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem in the secondmonth, 5Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites, and all who came from the captivity to Jerusalem, began the work and 6appointed the Levites from twentyyears and older to oversee the work of the house of the LORD.
Then 7Jeshua with his sons and brothersstoodunited with Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of bJudah and the sons of Henadad with their sons and brothers the Levites, to oversee the workmen in the temple of God.
Now when the builders had 8laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, cthe priestsstood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the LORD9according to the ddirections of KingDavid of Israel.
1110They sang, praising and givingthanks to the LORD, saying, "11For He is good, for His lovingkindness is upon Israelforever." And all the peopleshouted with a greatshout when they praised the LORDbecause the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.
Yet many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' households, 12the oldmenwho had seen the firstetemple, wept with a loudvoice when the foundation of thishouse was laid before their eyes, while manyshoutedaloud for joy,
so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the shout of joy from the sound of the weeping of the people, for the peopleshouted with a loudshout, and the sound was heardfaraway.
