So Jacob was left alone,1 and a man2 wrestled with him till daybreak.
When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip3 so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."427
The man asked him, "What is your name?" "Jacob,"5 he answered.
Then the man said, "Your name6 will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,a7 because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."829
Jacob said, "Please tell me your name."9 But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?"10 Then he blessed11 him there.
So Jacob called the place Peniel,b saying, "It is because I saw God face to face,12 and yet my life was spared."
