31 Then they got Joseph's robe,1 slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.2 32 They took the ornamented robe3 back to their father and said, "We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son's robe." 33 He recognized it and said, "It is my son's robe! Some ferocious animal4 has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces."5 34 Then Jacob tore his clothes,6 put on sackcloth7 and mourned for his son many days.8 35 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him,9 but he refused to be comforted.10 "No," he said, "in mourning will I go down to the gravea11 to my son.12" So his father wept for him. 36 Meanwhile, the Midianitesb13 sold Joseph14 in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard.15
