On the 1twenty-fourth of the ninth month, in the secondyear of Darius, the word of the LORDcame to Haggai the prophet, saying,
11"Thussays the LORD of hosts, '2Asknow the priests for a aruling:
12'If a mancarries3holymeat in the bfold of his garment, and touchesbread with cthis fold, or cookedfood, wine, oil, or any other food, will it becomeholy?' " And the priestsanswered, "No."
Then Haggaisaid, "4If one who is unclean from a dcorpsetouchesany of these, will the latter becomeunclean?" And the priestsanswered, "It will becomeunclean."
Then Haggaisaid, " '5So is thispeople. And so is thisnationbefore Me,' declares the LORD, 'and so is everywork of their hands; and what they offerthere is unclean.
'But now, do e6consider from thisdayfonward: before one 7stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD,
16gfrom that time when one came to a grain heap of twenty measures, there would be only ten; and when one came to the winevat to drawfiftyhmeasures, there would be only twenty.
'I smote you and everywork of your hands with 8blastingwind, mildew and hail; iyet you did not come back to Me,' declares the LORD.
'Do j9consider from thisdaykonward, from the 10twenty-fourthday of the ninth month; from the daywhen the temple of the LORD was 11founded, lconsider :
'Is the seedstill in the barn? Evenincluding the vine, the figtree, the pomegranate and the olivetree, it has not borne fruit. Yet from thisday on I will 12bless you."'
