"When Israel was a child,1 I loved2 him, and out of Egypt I called my son.32
But the more Ia called Israel, the further they went from me.b4 They sacrificed to the Baals5 and they burned incense to images.63
It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms;7 but they did not realize it was I who healed8 them.
4
I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love;9 I lifted the yoke10 from their neck and bent down to feed11 them.125
"Will they not return to Egypt13 and will not Assyria14 rule over them because they refuse to repent?156
Swords16 will flash in their cities, will destroy the bars17 of their gates and put an end to their plans.
7
My people are determined to turn18 from me.19 Even if they call to the Most High, he will by no means exalt them.

"How can I give you up,20 Ephraim?21 How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboiim?22 My heart is changed within me; all my compassion23 is aroused.249
I will not carry out my fierce anger,25 nor will I turn and devastate26 Ephraim. For I am God, and not man27-- the Holy One28 among you. I will not come in wrath.c10
They will follow the LORD; he will roar29 like a lion.30 When he roars, his children will come trembling31 from the west.3211
They will come trembling like birds from Egypt, like doves33 from Assyria.34 I will settle them in their homes,"35 declares the LORD.
