Isaiah 14:4-26 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
4 you will take up this taunt1 against the king of Babylon:2 How the oppressor3 has come to an end! How his furya has ended! 5 The LORD has broken the rod4 of the wicked,5 the scepter6 of the rulers, 6 which in anger struck down peoples7 with unceasing blows, and in fury subdued8 nations with relentless aggression.9 7 All the lands are at rest and at peace;10 they break into singing.11 8 Even the pine trees12 and the cedars of Lebanon exult over you and say, "Now that you have been laid low, no woodsman comes to cut us down."13 9 The graveb14 below is all astir to meet you at your coming; it rouses the spirits of the departed15 to greet you-- all those who were leaders16 in the world; it makes them rise from their thrones-- all those who were kings over the nations.17 10 They will all respond, they will say to you, "You also have become weak, as we are; you have become like us."18 11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,19 along with the noise of your harps;20 maggots are spread out beneath you and worms21 cover you.22 12 How you have fallen23 from heaven, O morning star,24 son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!25 13 You said in your heart, "I will ascend26 to heaven; I will raise my throne27 above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,28 on the utmost heights29 of the sacred mountain.c 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;30 I will make myself like the Most High."31 15 But you are brought down32 to the grave,33 to the depths34 of the pit.35 16 Those who see you stare at you, they ponder your fate:36 "Is this the man who shook37 the earth and made kingdoms tremble, 17 the man who made the world a desert,38 who overthrew39 its cities and would not let his captives go home?"40 18 All the kings of the nations lie in state, each in his own tomb.41 19 But you are cast out42 of your tomb like a rejected branch; you are covered with the slain,43 with those pierced by the sword,44 those who descend to the stones of the pit.45 Like a corpse trampled underfoot, 20 you will not join them in burial,46 for you have destroyed your land and killed your people. The offspring47 of the wicked48 will never be mentioned49 again. 21 Prepare a place to slaughter his sons50 for the sins of their forefathers;51 they are not to rise to inherit the land and cover the earth with their cities. 22 "I will rise up52 against them," declares the LORD Almighty. "I will cut off from Babylon her name53 and survivors, her offspring and descendants,54" declares the LORD. 23 "I will turn her into a place for owls55 and into swampland; I will sweep her with the broom of destruction,56" declares the LORD Almighty.57

A Prophecy Against Assyria

24 The LORD Almighty has sworn,58 "Surely, as I have planned,59 so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand.60 25 I will crush the Assyrian61 in my land; on my mountains I will trample him down. His yoke62 will be taken from my people, and his burden removed from their shoulders.63" 26 This is the plan64 determined for the whole world; this is the hand65 stretched out over all nations.
