14 Therefore hear the word of the LORD,¹ you scoffers² who rule this people in Jerusalem. 15 You boast, "We have entered into a covenant with death,³ with the grave^a we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by,⁴ it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie⁵ our refuge and falsehood^b our hiding place.⁶" 16 So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion,⁷ a tested stone,⁸ a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;⁹ the one who trusts will never be dismayed.¹⁰ 17 I will make justice¹¹ the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line;¹² hail¹³ will sweep away your refuge, the lie, and water will overflow¹⁴ your hiding place. 18 Your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the grave will not stand.¹⁵ When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by,¹⁶ you will be beaten down¹⁷ by it.
