Then Isaiah said, "Hear now, you house of David!1 Is it not enough2 to try the patience of men? Will you try the patience3 of my God4 also?
Therefore the Lord himself will give youa a sign:5 The virgin6 will be with child and will give birth to a son,7 andb will call him Immanuel.c815
He will eat curds9 and honey10 when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right.
But before the boy knows11 enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,12 the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.1317
The LORD will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away14 from Judah--he will bring the king of Assyria.15"
In that day16 the LORD will whistle17 for flies from the distant streams of Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria.1819
They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices19 in the rocks, on all the thornbushes20 and at all the water holes.
In that day21 the Lord will use22 a razor hired from beyond the Riverd23--the king of Assyria24--to shave your head and the hair of your legs, and to take off your beards25 also.2621
In that day,27 a man will keep alive a young cow and two goats.2822
And because of the abundance of the milk they give, he will have curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds29 and honey.3023
In that day,31 in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,e32 there will be only briers and thorns.3324
Men will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers34 and thorns.
As for all the hills35 once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns;36 they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.37
