Job 15:20-35 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment,1 the ruthless through all the years stored up for him.2 21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears;3 when all seems well, marauders attack him.4 22 He despairs of escaping the darkness;5 he is marked for the sword.6 23 He wanders about7--food for vulturesa;8 he knows the day of darkness9 is at hand.10 24 Distress and anguish11 fill him with terror;12 they overwhelm him, like a king13 poised to attack, 25 because he shakes his fist14 at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty,15 26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield.16 27 "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh,17 28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives,18 houses crumbling to rubble.19 29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure,20 nor will his possessions spread over the land.21 30 He will not escape the darkness;22 a flame23 will wither his shoots,24 and the breath of God's mouth25 will carry him away.26 31 Let him not deceive27 himself by trusting what is worthless,28 for he will get nothing in return.29 32 Before his time30 he will be paid in full,31 and his branches will not flourish.32 33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes,33 like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.34 34 For the company of the godless35 will be barren, and fire will consume36 the tents of those who love bribes.37 35 They conceive trouble38 and give birth to evil;39 their womb fashions deceit."
