Blow the trumpet1 in Zion;2 sound the alarm on my holy hill.3 Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the LORD 4 is coming. It is close at hand5--
a day of darkness6 and gloom,78 a day of clouds9 and blackness.10 Like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army11 comes, such as never was of old12 nor ever will be in ages to come.
Before them fire13 devours, behind them a flame blazes. Before them the land is like the garden of Eden,14 behind them, a desert waste15-- nothing escapes them.
They have the appearance of horses;16 they gallop along like cavalry.
With a noise like that of chariots17 they leap over the mountaintops, like a crackling fire18 consuming stubble, like a mighty army drawn up for battle.
At the sight of them, nations are in anguish;19 every face turns pale.207
They charge like warriors;21 they scale walls like soldiers. They all march in line,22 not swerving23 from their course.
They do not jostle each other; each marches straight ahead. They plunge through defenses without breaking ranks.
They rush upon the city; they run along the wall. They climb into the houses;24 like thieves they enter through the windows.2510
Before them the earth shakes,26 the sky trembles,27 the sun and moon are darkened,28 and the stars no longer shine.2911
The LORD 30 thunders31 at the head of his army;32 his forces are beyond number, and mighty are those who obey his command. The day of the LORD is great;33 it is dreadful. Who can endure it?34
"Even now," declares the LORD, "return35 to me with all your heart,36 with fasting and weeping and mourning."
Rend your heart37 and not your garments.38 Return39 to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,40 slow to anger and abounding in love,41 and he relents from sending calamity.4214
Who knows? He may turn43 and have pity44 and leave behind a blessing45-- grain offerings and drink offerings46 for the LORD your God.
