1 How deserted¹ lies the city, once so full of people!² How like a widow³ is she, who once was great⁴ among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave.⁵ 2 Bitterly she weeps⁶ at night, tears are upon her cheeks. Among all her lovers⁷ there is none to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed⁸ her; they have become her enemies.⁹ 3 After affliction and harsh labor, Judah has gone into exile.¹⁰ She dwells among the nations; she finds no resting place.¹¹ All who pursue her have overtaken her¹² in the midst of her distress.
