He remembers his covenant1 forever, the word he commanded, for a thousand generations,

the covenant he made with Abraham,2 the oath he swore to Isaac.

He confirmed it3 to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant:411
"To you I will give the land of Canaan5 as the portion you will inherit."612
When they were but few in number,7 few indeed, and strangers in it,813
they wandered from nation to nation,9 from one kingdom to another.

He allowed no one to oppress10 them; for their sake he rebuked kings:1115
"Do not touch12 my anointed ones; do my prophets13 no harm."

He called down famine14 on the land and destroyed all their supplies of food;

and he sent a man before them-- Joseph, sold as a slave.1518
They bruised his feet with shackles,16 his neck was put in irons,

till what he foretold17 came to pass, till the word18 of the LORD proved him true.

The king sent and released him, the ruler of peoples set him free.1921
He made him master of his household, ruler over all he possessed,

to instruct his princes20 as he pleased and teach his elders wisdom.2123
Then Israel entered Egypt;22 Jacob lived23 as an alien in the land of Ham.24
