Some sat in darkness1 and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering2 in iron chains,3

for they had rebelled4 against the words of God and despised5 the counsel6 of the Most High.

So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.7

Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them8 from their distress.
14
He brought them out of darkness9 and the deepest gloom10 and broke away their chains.11
