Abraham was now old and well advanced in years,1 and the LORD had blessed2 him in every way.32
He said to the chiefa servant4 in his household, the one in charge of all that he had,5 "Put your hand under my thigh.63
I want you to swear7 by the LORD, the God of heaven8 and the God of earth,9 that you will not get a wife for my son10 from the daughters of the Canaanites,11 among whom I am living,124
but will go to my country and my own relatives13 and get a wife for my son Isaac.14"
The servant asked him, "What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?15 Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?16"
"Make sure that you do not take my son back there,"17 Abraham said.
"The LORD, the God of heaven,18 who brought me out of my father's household and my native land19 and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, 'To your offspringb20 I will give this land'21--he will send his angel before you22 so that you can get a wife for my son from there.
If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath23 of mine. Only do not take my son back there."249
So the servant put his hand under the thigh25 of his master26 Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
