Then Jeremiahcalled1Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruchwrote on a a2scrollbat the dictation of Jeremiahall the words of the LORDwhich He had spoken to him.
5JeremiahcommandedBaruch, saying, "I am c3restricted; I cannotgo into the house of the LORD.
"So you go and 4read from the scrollwhich you have 5writtendat my dictation the words of the LORDeto the people in the LORD'Shouse on a 6fastday. And also you shall read them fto all the people of Judah who come from their cities.
"7Perhaps their supplication will gcomebefore the LORD, and everyone will turn from his evilway, for 8great is the anger and the wrath that the LORD has pronouncedagainstthispeople."
8Baruch the son of Neriahdid according to all that Jeremiah the prophetcommanded him, 9reading from the book the words of the LORD in the LORD'Shouse.
Now in the 10fifthyear of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the 11ninthmonth, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who 12came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalemproclaimed a 13fastbefore the LORD.
Then Baruchread from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD in the 14chamber of 15Gemariah the son of Shaphan the 16scribe, in the uppercourt, at the 17entry of the NewGate of the LORD'Shouse, to all the people.
Now when 18Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heardall the words of the LORD from the book,
he wentdown to the king'shouse, into the scribe'schamber. And behold, all the officials were sittingthere -19Elishama the scribe, and 20Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and 21Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.
13Micaiah22declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruchread from the book to the people.
Then all the officialssent23Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, "Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read to the people and come." So Baruch the son of Neriah24took the scroll in his hand and went to them.
They said to him, "Sitdown, please, and read it to us." So Baruch25read it to them.
When they had heardall the words, they turned in 26fearone to another and said to Baruch, "We will surely27reportallthesewords to the king."
And they askedBaruch, saying, "Tell us, please, 28how did you writeallthesewords? Was it hat his dictation?"
Then Baruchsaid to them, "He 29dictatedallthesewords to me, and I wrote them with ink on the book."
Then the officialssaid to Baruch, "Go, 30hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and do not let anyone knowwhere you are."
So they went to the 31king in the court, but they had deposited the scroll in the chamber of 32Elishama the scribe, and they reportedall the words to the king.
Then the kingsentJehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi33read it to the king as well as to all the officials who stoodbeside the king.
Now the king was sitting in the 34winterhouse in the 35ninthmonth, with a fire burning in the brazierbefore him.
When Jehudi had readthree or fourcolumns, the king cut it with a scribe'sknife and 36threw it into the fire that was in the brazier, untilall the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.
Yet the king and all his servants who heardallthesewords were 37not afraid, nor did they 38rend their garments.
Even thoughElnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah39pleaded with the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.
And the kingcommandedJerahmeel the king'sson, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to 40seizeBaruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the 41LORDhid them.
Then the word of the LORDcame to Jeremiahafter the king had 42burned the scroll and the wordswhich43Baruch had written at the dictation of Jeremiah, saying,
"44Takeagainanotherscroll and write on it all the formerwords that were 45on the firstscrollwhichJehoiakim the king of Judahburned.
"And concerningJehoiakimking of Judah you shall say, 'Thussays the LORD, "You have 46burnedthisscroll, saying, '47Why have you written on it ithat the 48king of Babylon will certainlycome and destroythisland, and will make man and beast to cease from it?' "
30'Thereforethussays the LORDconcerningJehoiakimking of Judah, "He shall have49no one to sit on the throne of David, and his 50deadbody shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.
"I will also 51punish him and his jdescendants and his servants for their iniquity, and I will 52bring on them and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the men of Judahall the calamity that I have declared to them-but they did not listen.""'
Then Jeremiahtookanotherscroll and gave it to Baruch the son of Neriah, the scribe, and he 53wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiahall the words of the bookwhichJehoiakimking of Judah had burned in the fire; and manyksimilar words were added to them.
