"A word1 was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a whisper2 of it.313
Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on men,414
fear and trembling5 seized me and made all my bones shake.615
A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end.716
It stopped, but I could not tell what it was. A form stood before my eyes, and I heard a hushed voice:817
'Can a mortal be more righteous than God?9 Can a man be more pure than his Maker?1018
If God places no trust in his servants,11 if he charges his angels with error,1219
how much more those who live in houses of clay,13 whose foundations14 are in the dust,15 who are crushed16 more readily than a moth!1720
Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces; unnoticed, they perish forever.1821
Are not the cords of their tent pulled up,19 so that they die20 without wisdom?'a21
