Then the Israelites cried1 out to the LORD, "We have sinned2 against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals."311
The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians,4 the Amorites,5 the Ammonites,6 the Philistines,712
the Sidonians, the Amalekites8 and the Maonitesa9 oppressed you10 and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?
But you have forsaken11 me and served other gods,12 so I will no longer save you.
Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save13 you when you are in trouble!14"
But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best,15 but please rescue us now."
Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD.16 And he could bear Israel's misery17 no longer.1817

The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, "Whoever will launch the attack against the Ammonites will be the head20 of all those living in Gilead."
