6 "In the days of Shamgar son of Anath,¹ in the days of Jael,² the roads³ were abandoned; travelers took to winding paths.⁴ 7 Village life^a in Israel ceased, ceased until I,^b Deborah,⁵ arose, arose a mother in Israel. 8 When they chose new gods,⁶ war came to the city gates,⁷ and not a shield or spear⁸ was seen among forty thousand in Israel. 9 My heart is with Israel's princes, with the willing volunteers⁹ among the people. Praise the LORD! 10 "You who ride on white donkeys,¹⁰ sitting on your saddle blankets, and you who walk along the road, consider 11 the voice of the singers^c at the watering places. They recite the righteous acts¹¹ of the LORD, the righteous acts of his warriors^d in Israel. "Then the people of the LORD went down to the city gates.¹²
