6 "In the days of Shamgar son of Anath,1 in the days of Jael,2 the roads3 were abandoned; travelers took to winding paths.4 7 Village lifea in Israel ceased, ceased until I,b Deborah,5 arose, arose a mother in Israel. 8 When they chose new gods,6 war came to the city gates,7 and not a shield or spear8 was seen among forty thousand in Israel. 9 My heart is with Israel's princes, with the willing volunteers9 among the people. Praise the LORD! 10 "You who ride on white donkeys,10 sitting on your saddle blankets, and you who walk along the road, consider 11 the voice of the singersc at the watering places. They recite the righteous acts11 of the LORD, the righteous acts of his warriorsd in Israel. "Then the people of the LORD went down to the city gates.12
