Luke 19:43

43 The time will come when your enemies will build fortifications around you, encircle you, and attack you from all sides.

Luke 19:43 Meaning and Commentary

Luke 19:43

For the days shall come upon thee
Suddenly, and very quickly, as they did within forty years after this:

that thine enemies;
the Romans, and such the Jews took them to be, and might easily understand who our Lord meant:

shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep
thee in on every side:
which was not only verified in the Roman armies closely besieging them; but particularly in this, as Josephus relates F20 that Titus built a wall about the city, of thirty nine furlongs long, and thirteen forts in it which reached ten furlongs, and all done in three days time; by which means they were pent up, starved, and famished, and reduced to inexpressible distress.

Luke 19:43 In-Context

41 As Jesus came to the city and observed it, he wept over it.
42 He said, "If only you knew on this of all days the things that lead to peace. But now they are hidden from your eyes.
43 The time will come when your enemies will build fortifications around you, encircle you, and attack you from all sides.
44 They will crush you completely, you and the people within you. They won't leave one stone on top of another within you, because you didn't recognize the time of your gracious visit from God."
45 When Jesus entered the temple, he threw out those who were selling things there.
