John 7:43 Meaning and Commentary

John 7:43

So there was a division among the people concerning him.
] Some, though they did not go so far as to believe him to be the Messiah, yet took him to be a prophet, and a very extraordinary one; others made no difficulty to assert him to be the Christ; and others objected to it on account of the country from whence he came, and so fulfilled the words of Christ, ( Luke 12:51 ) .

John 7:43 In-Context

41 others said, "This is the Messiah." But others said, "How can the Messiah come from the Galil?
42 Doesn't the Tanakh say that the Messiah is from the seed of Davidf and comes from Beit-Lechem,g the village where David lived?"
43 So the people were divided because of him.
44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him.
45 The guards came back to the head cohanim and the P'rushim, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?"
