Luke 20

20:1  And it came to pass, on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple1, and preaching the gospel2, there came upon him the chief priests and the scribes with the elders3;
    IN REPLY TO THE QUESTIONS AS TO HIS AUTHORITY, JESUS GIVES THE THIRD GREAT GROUP OF PARABLES. (In the Court of the Temple. Tuesday, April 4, A.D. 30.) A. INTRODUCTION. Matthew 21:23-27 ; Mark 11:27-33 ; Luke 20:1-8

But others, perceiving the meaning underlying the parable, shrank from acceptingwhat would otherwise have been to them a very proper ending, and said,"Mee genoito", which means literally, "Be it not so", and which mightproperly be paraphrased by our emphatic "Never"! but which the Revisersin translating have, with small warrant, seen fit to paraphrase byusing the semi-profane expression, "God forbid". There are fourteensuch mistranslations in the epistles of Paul according to theAuthorized Version ( Romans 3:4 Romans 3:6 Romans 3:31 ; Romans 6:2 Romans 6:15 ; Romans 7:7 Romans 7:13 ; Romans 9:14 ; Romans 11:1 ; 1 Corinthians 6:15 Galatians 2:17 ; Galatians 3:21 ; Galatians 6:14 ), and only one of them ( Galatians 6:14 ), is correctedin the Revised Version. In defense of these translations it is assertedthat the phrase is an idiomatic invocation of the Deity, but the casecannot be made out, since the Deity is not addressed.

20:17  But he looked upon them1, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner2?

  1. But he looked upon them. Thus emphasizing the fact that they had repudiated a most just decree. His look, doubtless, resembled that of aparent surprised at the outspoken rebellion of his children.

We are not surprised at the destruction of Jerusalem when wesee the religious teachers of the nation employing their youngdisciples in such a work as this. To play detective and entrap a roguein his speech and thus become a man-hunter is debasing enough; but toseek thus to entrap a righteous man is simply diabolical.

120:21  And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person [of any], but of a truth teachest the way of God:
