This is going to be a tough first post and I hope I don't end up getting banned after.
This has been a crazy weekend; starting with a seemingly innocent chat session with a former J.W. facebook friend, who turned out to be a Calvinist. I'd heard a lot of things about Calvinism that I didn't care for, but decided I'd get the straight scoop rather than just reading stuff here and there. WELL, that turned out to be an exercise in UTTER FRUSTRATION on a level that can't be equaled even by door to door J.W's.
I found myself walking to my blood donor clinic; blathering either in my head or talking to myself (hope not) about how the god of Calvinism would allow most of the world to go to hell while so many were the ELECT, according to God's 'SOVEREIGN WILL'. What that actually means in people speak, I wish I knew. I'm CHOSEN but if my family is lost, then that's GOD'S decision, and not their choice. Tough luck for them! Long story short, We have NO SAY about our eternal destiny in Calvinism.
The person I was talking to said that 2 Peter 3:9 didn't refer to the world, en masse, but only to the ELECT. But that contradicts the idea of Ezekiel 33:11 which connects to 2 Peter 3:9 (via center column references in my Bible) or 1 John 2:2. I finally got so angry and deeply frustrated and heart sick that I said to this facebook friend, "if you're willing to worship a god who'd send your family to hell on a whim then you can keep him!" I went through the rest of the day contemplating Atheism until I went on line and found places where Calvinism was debunked. One youtube post contained the caption; 'ELECT= WHOSOEVER WILL'
Put it to you this way; were you to take the doctrine of Calvinism and put it back into the Garden of Eden, then God not only KNEW that Adam and Eve would fall but DECIDED that they would fall. This, in effect, makes God an accomplice in THE sin that would destroy mankind's relationship with HIM, and result in the need for Christ to come and die for the sin of humanity.
What's the difference? Free Will. Or the lack thereof. To KNOW something is not the same as making that thing happen. Like if you were to get into a time machine and go to a poling station in Germany in 1933, would you be responsible for the fact that a lot of people voted for ADOLF HITLER? NO. But if you went to each of those people, at that poling station and TOLD THEM to vote for Hitler, THEN you would be responsible! According to Calvinism, God told Adam and Eve NOT to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and then turned around and decided that they would eat of the fruit. They had NO choice in the matter. Neither do we. We're either going to heaven or hell but not by OUR choice.
The God of Calvinism is some divine Jim Henson; puppeteering us through life. Where we end up has nothing to do with us, anymore than Kermit or Miss Piggy have a real choice. They went where Jim or Frank lead them. Not much of a choice, right? That's where I felt like I was, in just a day, under the false teaching of Calvinism. Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go and unbrainwash myself.
