After his father died, Josiah reigned in his father's place. He did what was right in the sight of God even though He was not taught it (by example).
The high preist passed the scribe the Book of the Covenant and when Josiah read it, he wept bitterly because his fathers did not keep the law of the book.
When God saw his sincerity, God still pronounced His judgement on Isreal for their disobendience, but promised Josiah that he would not live to see the calamity.
