Luke 23:45 Meaning and Commentary

Luke 23:45

And the sun was darkened
There was an eclipse of it, which was preternatural, it being now full moon, and lasted three hours, and so total, as to darken the whole earth; and now was the prophecy in ( Amos 8:9 ) literally fulfilled: and the vail of the temple was rent in the midst. The Persic version renders it, "the gate of the temple"; and so the Syriac version, "the face of the gate of the temple"; (See Gill on Matthew 27:51).

Luke 23:45 In-Context

44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three,

46 And Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit. " Saying this, He breathed His last.
47 When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify God, saying, "This man really was righteous!"
