24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription. 25 "This is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN+F25 ARAMAIC "UPARSIN" (THAT IS, "AND PARSIN")+E 26 "This is what these words mean: Mene"^a: God has numbered the days¹ of your reign and brought it to an end.² 27 Tekel"^b: You have been weighed on the scales³ and found wanting.⁴ 28 Peres"^c: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes⁵ and Persians."⁶ 29 Then at Belshazzar's command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck,⁷ and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.⁸ 30 That very night Belshazzar,⁹ king¹⁰ of the Babylonians,^d was slain,¹¹ 31 and Darius¹² the Mede¹³ took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.
