  • a 1:2 - Huperetes: see Note, 1Cor. 4.1.
  • b 1:6 - Dikaioma: see Rom. 1.32.
  • c 1:7 - Lit. 'in their days.'
  • d 1:13 - * Meaning, 'Jehovah is gracious.'
  • e 1:14 - Or 'thou shalt have joy and rejoicing.'
  • f 1:15 - The Greek preposition indicates the time from when it would take place: see Gal. 1.15.
  • g 1:17 - En: but 'through' would suppose other men, whereas it is here characteristic merely of their own new path. The word for 'thoughts' here is that for 'practical wisdom.'
  • h 1:18 - Lit. 'in her days.'
  • i 1:19 - Or 'to bring the glad tidings of these things.' Lit. 'evangelize these things.'
  • j 1:20 - 'Which are such as shall be:' giving the character, not merely a relative pronoun. I have imitated an expression of the Authorized Version, by adding the article, which though somewhat antiquated, gives in a measure the idea of character, and may serve to distinguish the sense; so ch. 10.42.
  • k 1:22 - Naos, the shrine.
  • l 1:22 - As 'know,' Matt. 7.16.
  • m 1:25 - 'Jehovah.'
  • n 1:29 - 'Of what nature or character:' what the aim or meaning of it was.
  • o 1:32 - 'Highest' is a name, Hebrew Elyon. I notice therefore the absence of 'the:' see Gen. 14.18.
  • p 1:32 - 'Jehovah Elohim:' only occurrence in the Gospels.
  • q 1:33 - Or 'for ever;' but it is plural.
  • r 1:34 - See Note, Matt. 18.32.
  • s 1:35 - Or 'begotten.'
  • t 1:44 - Lit. 'took place.'
  • u 1:58 - 'Jehovah:' so vers. 66 and 68.
  • v 1:72 - 'To work,' or 'accomplish:' what the fathers had lived on by faith as promised mercy: 'Your father Abraham saw my day and was glad.'
  • w 1:76 - 'Jehovah.'
  • x 1:77 - Or 'salvation.' 'Saved' in ver. 74 is a different word: but the same as 'our deliverer from the coming wrath,' 1Thess. 1.10.
