  • a 1:2 - Many read 'in the prophets.' My impression is that it was originally 'in the prophet' simply.
  • b 1:2 - Mal. 3.1.
  • c 1:3 - Isa. 40.3.
  • d 1:13 - As Matt. 4.11, diakoneo.
  • e 1:15 - 'Believe in,' &c. A rare form of expression. It refers to believing, in the truth of the substance of a thing: see 2Tim. 1.12.
  • f 1:18 - See Note, Matt. 4.20.
  • g 1:23 - En: see Matt. 3.11, Note c. Not merely he had one, but he was completely under its power, characterized by it.
  • h 1:24 - The imperative of the verb 'to let alone,' but used as an interjection, as a cry of dissatisfaction.
  • i 1:24 - The force of 'Nazarene' here is simply, I apprehend, 'of Nazareth.' The word is different from that translated 'Nazaraean' in Matt. 2.23 and elsewhere.
  • j 1:34 - Oida: had the inward consciousness of who he was: see Note, 1Cor. 8.1.
  • k 1:41 - 'To touch freely,' 'handle,' as Matt. 8.3.
