There you will worship man-made gods1 of wood and stone,2 which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.329
But if from there you seek4 the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart5 and with all your soul.630
When you are in distress7 and all these things have happened to you, then in later days8 you will return9 to the LORD your God and obey him.
For the LORD your God is a merciful10 God; he will not abandon11 or destroy12 you or forget13 the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath.
Ask14 now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created man on the earth;15 ask from one end of the heavens to the other.16 Has anything so great17 as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of ?
Has any other people heard the voice of Goda speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived?1834
Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation,19 by testings,20 by miraculous signs21 and wonders,22 by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,23 or by great and awesome deeds,24 like all the things the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?
You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides him there is no other.2536
From heaven he made you hear his voice26 to discipline27 you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire.
Because he loved28 your forefathers and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength,2938
to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance,30 as it is today.
