Hazel [N] [S]

Heb. luz, ( Genesis 30:37 ), a nutbearing tree. The Hebrew word is rendered in the Vulgate by amygdalinus, "the almond-tree," which is probably correct. That tree flourishes in Syria.

The Hebrew term luz occurs only in ( Genesis 30:37 ) Authorities are divided between the hazel and the almond tree as representing the luz . The latter is most probably correct.
