one God and Father of all,1 who is over all and through all and in all.2

But to each one of us3 grace4 has been given5 as Christ apportioned it.

This is why ita says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives6 in his train and gave gifts to men."b7

(What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regionsc ?

He who descended is the very one who ascended8 higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)9

It was he who gave10 some to be apostles,11 some to be prophets,12 some to be evangelists,13 and some to be pastors and teachers,14

to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ15 may be built up16

until we all reach unity17 in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God18 and become mature,19 attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.20

Then we will no longer be infants,21 tossed back and forth by the waves,22 and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.23

Instead, speaking the truth in love,24 we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head,25 that is, Christ.
16
From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows26 and builds itself up27 in love,28 as each part does its work.
